What to watch for in Pitt sports this week

Sluggish start dooms Pitt basketball at Miami

Like most college students on a Sunday afternoon, Pitt experienced a potent hangover in Coral Gables. Fresh off a shocking comeback win over North Carolina on Tuesday, the Panthers fell flat against Miami.

Pitt men’s basketball entered Chapel Hill Wednesday night 0-7 all-time at the venue but took advantage of a depleted Tar Heels’ squad in a 73-65 win.

Report card: Grading the Panthers’ UNC victory

Panthers flake versus Wake, lose 69-65

When Pitt downed Florida State in the season opener last November the possibilities seemed endless. Pitt had a winning conference record for the first time since 2016 and head coach Jeff Capel’s rebuild appeared to be right on track.  13 games later, Capel and his Panthers have been knocked down a peg. Pitt (10-4, 1-2 ACC) squandered a 16-point first half lead and lost, 69-65 to Wake Forest (8-5, 1-2 ACC) on Saturday afternoon.

Pitt offense goes off in 87-79 win over Canisius

The Pitt men’s basketball team scored a season-high 87 points — while conceding a season-high 79 — in a home victory over Canisius Monday afternoon.
