Pitt removes “antiquated” gendered homecoming king and queen titles

Pitt’s Alumni Association removed the gendered titles of homecoming king and queen for this October’s homecoming festivities and are instead opting for two gender-inclusive “Spirit of Pitt” winners.
In addition to the modern Hippocratic oath, the current first-year class of Pitt’s School of Medicine took a nontraditional oath on Aug. 14 addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, racial injustice and health care inequities.

Oakland restaurants ‘delivering’ on expectations despite COVID-19 restrictions

Although many restaurants have been able to open their doors to the public, many are still feeling the detrimental effects of COVID-19. To be in accordance with Allegheny County COVID-19 restrictions, restaurants must close their doors by 11 p.m., keep the number of people in the building below 25% of full capacity, maintain social distancing and enforce mask-wearing.
Gene’s Place, a once bustling bar, is now much quieter on the weekends.

Oakland bars find ways to connect with students amid strict COVID-19 rules

Many bars do not see how they can profit under the ever-changing county and state orders. Popular Oakland spots such as Garage Door Saloon and Hemingway’s Cafe are currently closed. Mario’s Oakland Saloon joins Gene’s Place and Thirsty Scholar in offering takeout drinks, and Bootleggers currently offers outdoor seating options.

Pitt added 18 new COVID-19 cases, composed entirely of students, between Monday and Thursday.
Chancellor Patrick Gallagher said Thursday that it’s likely that next semester’s schedule will be compressed similarly to the fall so there aren’t vacations where people leave and come back to campus.

Chancellor Patrick Gallagher said Thursday that he expects the Flex@Pitt model to continue into the spring semester due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He also said it’s likely that next semester’s schedule will be compressed similar to the fall so there aren’t vacations where people leave and come back to campus.

SGB addresses latest COVID-19 case numbers

SGB released a statement on Monday in response to the University’s decision last week to allow professors to request to move their class to in-person instruction if there is a “definable benefit,” . Board members and committee chairs also discussed COVID-19 and student activities budget updates and conversations with Pitt police, among other updates.

Pitt adds 22 COVID-19 cases since Thursday

Pitt added 22 new COVID-19 cases, composed of entirely students, between last Friday and Monday, continuing an upward trend in reported cases, though less than in previous case reports.
“Violence on the Rise: The Troubled Relationship Between Covid-19 and Domestic Violence” led by Carrie Benson, the prevention and education coordinator in Pitt’s Sexual Violence Prevention Office, and Paula Davis, the associate vice chancellor for diversity in the School of Health Science, took place on Wednesday and was the next installment of Pitt’s ‘This is not Normal’ town hall series.

Dance teams take their practices, performances online

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Pitt’s Irish dance club could be found every Monday night practicing in the Pete. But this year, Mary Grace Mooney, the president of the team, said the timed jumps and leaps will have to be done within the walls of dorm rooms, apartments and parking lots.
