When Pitt men’s basketball head coach Jeff Capel accepted his job in 2018, he was widely labeled a home-run hire. For his first two seasons, he looked the part, which makes his tenure’s sudden turn for the worse all the more surprising and disappointing.

Pitt drops ACC opener to Virginia, 57-56, on last-second shot

After holding another late lead, Pitt men’s basketball engineered another brutal collapse and last-second loss, this time to Virginia, 57-56 in the ACC opener on Friday night in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Loewe’s put-back stuns Panthers in 54-53 loss to Minnesota

Luke Loewe scored just two points on Tuesday night against Pitt, but they were the biggest of the game. Minnesota, despite trailing for most of the evening, stole a 54-53 win from the Panthers in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge.

Burton returns as Pitt sneaks past UNCW, 59-51, to earn first win

Nothing has come easy for Pitt men’s basketball so far this season, even its first win. The Panthers almost let leads as big as 17 slip away from them, but ultimately did just enough to pull out their first win, 59-51 over UNC Wilmington on Tuesday night.

In front of an animated home crowd, Pitt and West Virginia played a game befitting its nickname. In a chippy matchup between rivals, the Panthers succumbed to “Press Virginia,” turning the ball over 32 times in a 74-59 loss to the Mountaineers.

The Citadel routs Pitt, 78-63, in season opener
