Pitt basketball returns assistant coach Barry “Slice” Rohrssen

Pitt men’s basketball saw a change in its coaching staff Friday as Jamie Dixon officially announced addition of former assistant coach Barry “Slice” Rohrssen. Rohrssen originally spent time as a Pitt assistant from 1999-2004 and an associate head coach from 2004-06. During his time at Pitt the Panthers went 133-33.

“We are extremely excited to bring Barry back to Pitt,” Dixon said in a statement from a press release issued by Pitt Athletics. “From the start, Barry played an integral role in the success and building of our program. He has a great coaching background, is a good recruiter and has an exceptional understanding of how we operate our program.”

In his time away from Pitt, Rohrssen served as the head coach at Manhattan College from 2006-2011. Competing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), the Jaspers compiled just a 58-95 record under Rohrssen and a conference record of 33-64.

Rohrssen’s only year of relative success at Manhattan came in 2008-09 when the Jaspers finished 16-14 and in fourth-place in the MAAC. The season was the only one in which Manhattan finished with a record over .500 under Rohrssen.

In the year between his firing at Manhattan and re-hiring at Pitt Rohrssen served as an assistant coach for the Idaho Stampede, the National Basketball Association Development League affiliate of the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers. Through 2013, Rohrssen owns 18 years of coaching experience.

“It’s extremely exciting to be returning to Pitt,” Rohrssen said in a statement released. “We obviously want to continue and build upon the great tradition established at Pitt. The program’s success speaks for itself. It’s been an honor and I’m proud of my association with the University of Pittsburgh. I love the city of Pittsburgh and feel that it’s home. It’s a great place to be.”
