Aside from Pitt men’s basketball, Pitt athletics had a fantastic weekend on the mat and court. Women’s basketball made history, wrestling continued to dominate and gymnastics had a strong start to its 2025 campaign.
Women’s basketball
The Panthers won 72-59 against SMU on Sunday afternoon, completing the largest regulation comeback win in NCAA women’s basketball history.
Pitt trailed by 31 points at the end of the first half, but somehow managed to keep the Mustangs scoreless in the third quarter and cut its deficit to the Mustangs to just four. The Panthers continued their dominance in the fourth quarter, outscoring SMU 26-10 and beating the Mustangs 72-59.
Graduate student center Khadija Faye was a powerhouse in the game, scoring 21 points and tying her career-high in blocks with six. Redshirt sophomore guard Mikayla Johnson scored a career-high 22 points, leading the Panthers in that department.
Up next, Pitt will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, on Jan. 16 to face off against NC State.
Wrestling
The No. 18 Panthers took home two wins this weekend against No. 15 Stanford in the Fitzgerald Field House, where they have already won six bouts, and No. 22 West Virginia in the WVU Coliseum.
Pitt has had a largely successful season thus far, improving its record to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the ACC.
Highlights on Friday included when No. 12 redshirt sophomore Mac Stout won by a score of 10-1 at 197 lbs., continuing 10 straight matches and leading Pitt with a 13-2 record. No. 26 redshirt sophomore Finn Solomon upset No. 8-ranked sixth-year Jaden Abas in the 149 lb. division.
On Saturday, the Panthers wrestled the Mountaineers in the Backyard Brawl. Pitt took the win with a final score of 25-17. Stout continued his winning streak by taking home a 13-3 victory in the 197 lb. division. No. 14 redshirt sophomore Dayton Pitzer had a match-clinching victory in the 285 lb. division against fifth-year Michael Wolfgram.
Next up, the Panthers travel to Bucknell on Friday, Jan. 17.
Gymnastics
Pitt gymnastics opened its season this past weekend at the Next Level Podium Challenge in Michigan, earning wins over Illinois State, George Washington and Western Michigan, bringing their record to 3-0-0.
Pitt took second in the balance beam with 48.675 points, with sophomore Emily Todd claiming the highest score of 9.775. Pitt was second in the floor exercise at 49.000 points, with senior Jordyn Ewing scoring highest for the Panthers at 9.900 points. In the vault, Pitt took second with a score of 48.875, with graduate student Elizabeth Cesarone shining with a score of 9.850. In the uneven bars, Pitt won with a score of 49.025. Graduate student Jah’Liyah Bedminster led the Panthers to victory with a score of 9.850.
The Panthers finished with an overall score of 195.575. Next up, they will host Clemson on Jan. 17.
