Members of both organizations will meet next week to discuss whether to set new dates for the events.
The 24-hour dance marathon was scheduled to begin at the Fitzgerald Field house at 2 p.m. today. The Black Action Society fashion show was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., also in the Fitzgerald Field House.
Black Action Society members planned to ask for $5 donations at the door to benefit Haitians.
The Pitt Dance Marathon was part of an effort to raise money for the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
In 2004, the Pitt student body agreed to raise $500,000 over five years for the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. The five-year deadline will run out at the end of this semester.
The dance marathon, which was sponsored by the Intrafraternal Council and the National Panhellenic Council, would have raised money for the cancer institute on behalf of the student body. Fraternity and sorority life donate more money to the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute than any other student organization.
After students complete their pledge, the cancer institute will name a lung cancer research lab in honor of Pitt students.
