After seeing limited play during the second and third days of football camp, Pitt coach Dave… After seeing limited play during the second and third days of football camp, Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt announced today that freshman Kolby Gray will undergo surgery on his throwing shoulder.

“I think the smart thing to do under the circumstances is get it taken care of right now and get him rehabbed,” Wannstedt said, suggesting Gray will redshirt his freshman year. “Hopefully he’ll be back doing some scout team type of work by the end of the season.”

Gray, a 6-foot-2 quarterback from Houston, Texas, felt fine after the first day of camp but later complained of severe pain in his shoulder. An MRI determined he had a tear in his shoulder.

He threw for more than 5,000 yards during his high school career. He enrolled at Pitt early and began taking classes this summer.

The Panthers will have their first practice in full pads tomorrow.
