The column astutely identifies the underlying impetus for the opposition to same-sex marriage when he asks, ‘At what point in American history did it become acceptable, and even commonplace, for the government to interfere with matters of religion?’ ‘ ‘ ‘ Like Mr. Stokum, I see a rising threat from those who would destroy constitutional protections that have previously excluded the United States from the religious tyranny that is becoming more commonplace in today’s world. ‘ ‘ ‘ Like proponents of Islamic Sharia law, the opponents of same-sex marriage have only one goal: the imposition of their religious beliefs on everyone. This should make gays as well as straights, and Democrats as well as Republicans, all shudder in fear. Amesh Adalja, MD University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine UPMC
