Pitt…Pitt Jazz Ensemble Spring Concert William Pitt Union Assembly Room 8 p.m. Featuring Curtis Fuller and Michael Mossman Tickets: $10 general admission, $5 students and seniors

Prepare for dizzying jazz melodies by some of the genre’s legends. Pitt’s Jazz Ensemble performs its spring concert tomorrow at 8 p.m. in the Assembly Room of the Union. This year two celebrity musicians join the 25-student ensemble.

The concert will feature talented trombonist Curtis Fuller and trumpeter Michael Mossman. Both musicians are distinguished jazz artists, having contributed to albums and tours with Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakely, among many others.

Fuller’s award-winning career has also led him to collaborations with Miles Davis and John Coltrane.

“These unions were pivotal to my career,” said Fuller in a recent telephone interview, referencing his work on Coltrane’s Blue Train album, and his time spent collaborating with Davis.

Fuller’s experience and skill bring great inspiration to the student performers. When asked what words of advice he had for young musicians, he responded that it’s essential to have faith, not only in God but also in oneself.

“You can accomplish your goals if you believe in yourself,” said Fuller. Growing up in an orphanage as one of only three black children out of 200 other orphans, Fuller had to overcome numerous obstacles to get where he is today. As much as jazz enthusiasts are anticipating Fuller’s Pittsburgh performance, he’s looking forward to visiting the city himself.

“It is always a joy to come back to Pittsburgh, it’s very neighborly,” said Fuller. “There are so many good schools and musicians in the area. I like to come through and go on night jams with people – it’s a great experience.”

Tickets for the concert can be purchased at the WPU box office at a price of $10 for general admission and $5 for students and senior citizens. Proceeds will help fund the Jazz Ensemble’s annual trip to Jamaica. For more information, call 412-624-4187.
