The Garage Door Saloon’s sign proclaiming its “Wetback Wednesday” special is no longer in the establishment’s window.

The bar’s manager Mark said the sign was stolen around 11 p.m. Sunday.

He also said the bar has video cameras in front of its door that caught the theft on tape.

The Pitt police and city police are currently conducting an investigation.

“The picture was clear as day,” Mark said. “So the police are doing their job.”

Some Pitt students have been boycotting the bar and its Wednesday special since the signs were put up at the end of February.

Amelia Marritz, who founded a Facebook group advertising the boycott, said it was great news the sign was taken down.

“They wrote on our Facebook group defending themselves and they didn’t seem at all remorseful,” she said. “Then they put up the sign that was insulting to those of us who complained.”

The sign she’s referring to is one that said: “For those easily offended: Now offering Mexican-American Wednesdays.”

The sign and its boycott have gotten national attention in the past few weeks. CNN, MSNBC and U.S. News ‘ World Report’s blog have all covered the story.
