Trevino’s “real” comedy now at The Improv

Steve Trevino, writer and sketch performer for Comedy Central’s “Mind of Mencia,” will parade his wit at Homestead’s The Improv tomorrow through Sunday.
After high school, the Texas native moved to Dallas and manned the door at a local improvisational comedy club to pay his bills. A few open-microphone nights were all he needed to prove himself worthy, and soon he became house MC.
Trevino’s big break, however, came when he befriended comedian Carlos Mencia. Their rapport led to an opportunity for Trevino: He opened for Mencia, Freddy Soto and Pablo Francisco on 2001’s “Three Amigos Comedy Tour.”
“Mencia took a liking to me,” Trevino recalls. “At the time we were doing huge theaters and for me coming from working the door, it was a dream come true. We got to do every major city in the country. Life was great.”
As far as his solo career goes, Trevino’s style is a bit controversial.
“I’m very upfront, and I’m very honest. Sometimes that gets me in trouble. My shows are very real. Everything I do is based in reality and my opinion and the way that I feel. If you’re a sensitive person, don’t come to my show.”
In fact, his “very real” style got him kicked off a Villanova University stage this past August when he was hired for a freshman orientation.
“Sometimes people are too polite. They’d rather lie to somebody than tell them the truth. I’d much rather have somebody tell me ‘Hey dude, you’re fat.’ Come on, I’ve put on six pounds since I last saw you. I don’t buy people’s sincerity. I think it’s bullsh–. I call people on it.”
In addition to touring, Trevino is currently working on nabbing a half-hour HBO special for himself, and he’s looking forward to the time he’ll spend in Pittsburgh.
“I’m just a regular guy. I’m blue collar, and Pittsburgh’s very blue collar. That’s why I like Pittsburgh. I can’t wait to get to Pittsburgh and eat a Primanti’s sandwich.”
