This Day In History 1855 The first train crosses the Panamanian isthmus. 1902 Andrew Carnegie puts $10 million toward the Carnegie Institute, which opens in Washington, D.C.
1973 A cease-fire goes into effect at 8 a.m. between the North and South Vietnemese armies.
1986 The U.S. space shuttle Challenger explodes 73 seconds after takeoff. Christa McAuliffe, who was aboard the shuttle, was to be the first U.S. civilian in space.
