Ranked No.1 nationally in the 174-pound weight class, the senior captured the title with a win in the second overtime period in his match against Michigan State’s Steve Luke, who was one of only two wrestlers to defeat Gavin last season.

Gavin finished the tournament with five victories, which include two major decisions and one fall.

The Panthers finished tied for eighth with Cal State-Fullerton out of 50 teams with 68.5 points. Michigan won the event.

Pitt was able to improve upon its spot in ninth place after the event’s first day of competition with strong performances from Gavin, senior Matt Kocher and junior Zach Sheaffer.

Kocher, ranked No. 6, finished fourth in the 157-pound division.

Sheaffer faltered in his first bout on Sunday, after winning four matches in a row on Saturday, to finish eighth in the heavyweight division.

Next up for Pitt is a trip to Ohio for a match against Ohio, UNC-Greensboro and Findlay on Dec. 16.
