If the beginning of Pitt football training camp was any kind of omen for the 2007 season,… If the beginning of Pitt football training camp was any kind of omen for the 2007 season, then the season would have been over before it even began.

Heralded freshman quarterback Pat Bostick unexpectedly left camp before practice even started, then, a few days later, Derek Kinder, Pitt’s star receiver and steady team leader, tore his ACL and will be out for the season.

It sure wasn’t the reassuring spark to the year Pitt fans were looking for. Message boards were flooded with depression. Possible threats loomed of alumni discontinuing their donations.

But it’s all OK now. Bostick is back with another talented class of freshmen. Kinder will return next season while an exciting group of young receivers gets a chance to grow into playmakers this year.

Though many don’t yet know what to make of this newer set of faces that, for the first time in three years, does not include Tyler Palko, H.B. Blades or Darrelle Revis, there are flashes of both hope and despair in the Pitt personnel.

Questions abound as Pitt approaches its home opener against Eastern Michigan Saturday, and we’ll have at least a few answers, or theories, after the game. Until then, though
