Pitt visits South Carolina, goes 6-6

“I think it was a good trip,” Pitt head coach Michelle Phalen said. “We got better as the week progressed.”

On Monday, senior pitcher Meghan Bostick was awarded the Big East Pitcher of the Week award for her efforts in South Carolina.

“She’s pitched better as we’ve played more, and she’s really throwing the ball well,” Phalen said. “She’s going to have a great season.”

The Panthers return to action when they head to Sacramento to compete in the Capital Classic Tournament Friday.

On Friday, Pitt plays Purdue and Minnesota, followed by Illinois, Kansas and Sacramento on Saturday.

South Carolina 1, Pitt 0

The first game of the Panthers’ trip, and first of a doubleheader, saw a great pitching effort by Bostick one-upped by South Carolina junior Melissa Hendon, who tossed a perfect game.

Bostick walked the leadoff hitter in the sixth, but retired the next two batters. Then a single put runners on first and second with two outs, and another single would score the only run of the game.

In the loss, Bostick pitched six innings, giving up six hits and one run, while striking out 12 batters.

Hendon struck out 14 hitters and retired all 21 Panther batters.

South Carolina 7, Pitt 1

The Panther bats remained quiet in the second game of the day, but the same couldn’t be said for South Carolina. The Gamecocks scored two runs in the first inning and four in the second.

For South Carolina, Kate Pouliot pitched a complete game, giving up one run on one hit while striking out nine batters.

The lone Panther hit came when senior Joey Scarf led off the fourth inning with a single and advanced to second on an error. She scored on a sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Kelly Murphy.

College of Charleston 2, Pitt 0

The first game of another doubleheader saw the continuation of Pitt’s slumping offense.

Once again, the Panthers had front-row seats to a superb pitching performance by a rival pitcher. This time it was Charleston’s Terri Mesko, who pitched a complete-game shutout, giving up three hits and striking out eight.

Freshman Kayla Zinger pitched six innings for Pitt, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out five.

Pitt had a chance to score in the fourth inning, but squandered the opportunity. Sophomores Scarf and Samantha Card each hit one-out singles and advanced a base on a wild pitch. With two runners in scoring position, the next two Panther hitters grounded out and struck out to end the threat.

Pitt 3, College of Charleston 1

The Panthers ended a four-game losing streak in the second game of the doubleheader. Pitt scored three runs in the third inning and finished with nine hits.

Senior Sheena Hellon started off the third with a single and then stole second base. Morgan Howard dropped down a bunt that was thrown away, scoring Hellon from second. A wild pitch scored Howard, and Card later singled in Jessica Dignon.

Bostick pitched five scoreless innings, giving up three hits and striking out nine. Sophomore Kaitlyn Schuster finished the game, pitching two innings, giving up a run on three hits.

Winthrop 8, Pitt 1

The Eagles jumped ahead of Pitt early and kept adding to the lead. Winthrop scored three runs in the second and one more in the third before the Panthers scored their only run in the fourth.

Dignon led off the fourth with a single and then stole second. She would score on a double by Scarf.

Winthrop added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth and another in the sixth.

In the second game between the two teams, the Panthers trailed heading into the seventh inning and appeared they would be swept again. But Card gave Pitt the lead, and eventually the win, when she hit her first home run of the year, a three-run round-tripper.

Pitt led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third, but Winthrop scored one in the third and two in the fifth to take the 3-2 lead.

Laura Belardinelli earned the win, pitching six innings and giving up three runs on seven hits.

Pitt 2, Akron 1

The Panthers started off the Winthrop Adidas Invitational against the Akron Zips. Like Pitt’s previous game, this one ended with another come-from-behind victory.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the seventh, Card singled and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Scarf. Then junior Kelly Stiles singled her in to tie the game.

The game needed an extra inning for a winner to emerge. In the top of the eighth, Hellon smacked a double to score Murphy.

Zinger pitched all eight innings, giving up only one run while striking out five to earn her first victory of the year.

In its second game of the day, Pitt was involved in another pitchers’ duel. For the first five innings, neither Pitt nor Furman scored. Then in the bottom of the sixth, the Panthers scored four runs.

Stiles doubled in Scarf and Dignon for the Panthers first two runs. Then Hellon hit a two-out double to score Rebecca Stottlemyer and Mary Hecker.

Bostick earned another win, pitching a complete-game shutout. She gave up only three hits and struck out eight.

Pitt’s three-game winning streak came to an end thanks to a one-hit shutout by Radford pitcher Ashley Taylor. A single by Scarf in the second was the only hit for the Panthers.

The Panthers had numerous chances to score, leaving 11 runners on base during the game. In the third, Pitt left the bases loaded, and in the fourth, fifth and sixth, it left two more runners on base each inning.

On the last day of the trip, the Panthers started off strong. They scored two runs in the first inning, one in the second and another in the fourth.

In the first, Howard walked, Dignon reached on an error and Card walked to load the bases. Then Scarf singled in Howard and Dignon to give the Panthers the lead.
