Tonight, internationally renowned poet and activist Sonia Sanchez will perform at “She Said: Words from Women.” Pittsburgh poets Fatin Abdal-Sabur, Veronica Corpuz, Vanessa German, Jan Beatty, Christiane Leach and Toi Derricotte will also read from their work.
Sonia Sanchez’s work is most related to the Black Arts Movement – a movement that fostered diversity in literature and the arts, especially in regard to the representation of black Americans. Much of her work depicts the tensions and struggles between different groups of people.
Of Sonia Sanchez’s 16 books, her most recent is a collection of poetry titled “Homegirls and Handgrenades.”
Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has held this event annually for the past three years as a way of celebrating female poets. Last year’s special guest was feminist icon Erica Jong.
