Freshman defensive end McKenzie Mathews is leaving the Pitt football team and transferring… Freshman defensive end McKenzie Mathews is leaving the Pitt football team and transferring from the University, according to a statement released by head coach Dave Wannstedt yesterday.

“McKenzie is uncertain whether he wants to continue playing football,” Wannstedt said.

“He has informed us that he will transfer from Pitt, perhaps to a smaller school closer to home.

“We wish him well in his future pursuits.”

Mathews saw action in nine games this past season as a true freshman. He recorded 10 tackles, five solo and five assisted during his action.

Mathews was recruited out of Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, N.Y.

In his final two seasons in high school, he recorded 39 sacks en route to being ranked the No. 27th defensive end by Scout.com.

In those final two seasons, Christian Brothers Academy finished 24-1, winning the New York Class AA championship in his junior season.

As a senior, Mathews helped lead the team to the semifinals of the state playoffs.

Mathews was considered a top recruit for the Panthers last season as one of the premier players out of the state of New York, along with running back Kevin Collier, who also signed with the Panthers.

The Panthers, who have been off since their last game against Louisville, now await signing day for new recruits in the coming month.
