Saturday’s audience at the Carnegie Lecture Hall is in for a special treat as two celebrated artists take the stage, sure to delight viewers with the music that so many critics have raved about. Blues artists Guy Davis and Mary Flower are scheduled to perform as the next acts in the Calliope Concert Series.

Combining his own songs and stories with the music of great blues artists, Davis devotes his career to reviving acoustic blues. National Public Radio chose his 2004 album Legacy as one of the best CDs of the year and also picked a song from it, “Uncle Tom’s Dead,” as one of the best songs of the year.

Despite his impressive career as a blues artist, his talents don’t simply stop there. According to his Web site, Davis is also a director, actor, composer and writer. He is the author of “In Bed with the Blues: The Adventures of Fishy Waters,” his one-man show that critics praised, and in 1991, he made his Broadway musical debut in “Mule Bone,” a collaboration between famous writers Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes.

With an equally impressive career, Flower will showcase her talents on the guitar with her classic Piedmont-fingerpicking playing style and music that incorporates jazz, folk and blues. Flower is a member of The Mother Folkers and is also the only woman to have ranked two times in the top three at the National Fingerpicking Guitar Championships. Like Davis, critics have praised her work thanks to her moving vocals and songwriting skills.

Currently celebrating its 13th year, Calliope is a nonprofit organization dedicated to contemporary and traditional folk music.
