As tryptophan comas subside and Thanksgiving pounds are lost, students across campus have set their sights on the Christmas season. Decorations adorn windows, shoppers crowd department stores and Christmas carols can be found on iPods everywhere. Luckily, the talented members of Pitt’s vocal ensembles have once again compiled some holiday favorites to wow crowds at their annual concerts.
Pitt’s Women’s Choral Ensemble was founded in 1927 and since then has been bringing together students, faculty and staff to perform a wide range of songs from a variety of genres. Their seasonal Christmas concert has been so successful in the past that this year’s event is already sold out. The show is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. in Heinz Chapel, and is free to the public. This year, the women will showcase traditional Christmas carols as well as more contemporary seasonal songs.
Founded in 1890, the Men’s Glee Club is the oldest non-athletic organization on campus. Since its formation, the Glee Club has toured the United States, Canada and Mexico and has even been featured on CBS’s hit soap opera As the World Turns. The highly acclaimed musical group will be performing its Christmas concert on Dec. 10 at 8:30 p.m. in Heinz Chapel. Tickets cost $10 for the general public, $5 for students and senior citizens and are free with a Pitt ID. Fortunately, tickets for this performance are still available.
Those with tickets will be treated to musical selections full of seasonal cheer performed by peers and mentors. And for everyone who missed out on this year’s festivities, have no fear. Both the Women’s Choral Ensemble and the Men’s Glee Club have performances scheduled for the spring semester.
