A water main burst outside of Lothrop Hall at approximately 7:30 p.m. last night, causing… A water main burst outside of Lothrop Hall at approximately 7:30 p.m. last night, causing students to evacuate and eventually relocate to the Petersen Events Center for the night.

Lothrop Hall’s two main generators were left underwater. The flooding affected its mechanical rooms.

Some of the displaced residents were frustrated.

“I don’t have a cell phone, and I have class at 8 a.m.,” freshman Ishioma Opia said.

Opia mentioned that she needed to get into her building to put away her belongings, as she stood next to a CVS bag.

But, because of the circumstances, she didn’t have the chance.

“Now I’m going to have to trash my $1.99 ice cream,” she said. “That sucks.”

Even if Opia could stay in Lothrop Hall, she would be under fire watch, which means that people would have to patrol the halls, acting as a human fire alarms.

Capt. Jim Cornyin, of the Pittsburgh Fire Department, said that because there are no fire alarms, students would have to be under fire watch until the fire alarms could be reactivated.
