Delicious cheesesteaks are just across the river

So after rounding up three native Philly Cheesesteak eaters, it was time to find out if Southside Steaks could stand up to the test.

The first thing you notice when you walk in is just how clean the place is and how nice the staff treats its customers. If you’re not sure what you want to order, no problem, you can take your time.

While figuring out if you want to go the traditional route, an original steak with Cheez Whiz, or opt for one of their specialty steaks or salads, you can listen to classic rock playing through the house speakers and catch an update on the game by watching one of the televisions anchored above you.

After you make your decision, grab a stool at one of the tables along the store front. The interior of the store — warm wood covered with gold and burgundy paint — gives the place a comfortable, “old friend” feeling. Your order is called by number and served to you on a wooden tray.

Featuring imported Amorosa rolls and Cheez Whiz, Southside Steaks does everything a Pittsburgh joint can to bring a taste of Philly to the ‘Burgh. And their special Bacon Cheddar Fries are enough to make your taste buds happy and terrify your arteries. You have your choice of mild to hot peppers to top off the cheesesteak, and for dessert, you can grab your Tastykake pastry of choice.

Prices are reasonable — a cheesesteak and fries will run you about $10 — and they accept Discover, Visa and MasterCard. Even better, if you’re willing to order more than five steaks, they’ll deliver for free to Oakland from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

So does it pass the test? That’s up to you. Pat’s and Geno’s are legendary, but if you give it a chance, Southside Steaks just might be the little taste of home you’ve been missing.
