The Panthers, who were ranked in a preseason poll at No. 15 in the country, rebounded from losses in their first two games to win both games of their doubleheader Sunday.
Pitt was victorious in a very convincing fashion in both games, as it outscored its opponents 20-6. In the first game, the Panthers defeated Kenyon 11-4 and followed that victory with a 9-2 win over Seton Hill.
Along with their national ranking, the Panthers are ranked third in the Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse League’s preseason poll.
This weekend, Pitt will be traveling to Orlando, Fla., to participate in the first Sunshine State Invitational. The three-day tournament will be hosted by both Florida and Central Florida. Of the seven teams participating, four are ranked in the nation’s top 15.
On Friday, Pitt will take on No. 6 Florida at 8 p.m. They will play No. 14 Texas A’M on Saturday morning and follow that game with a contest against Georgia that afternoon. The Panthers will then face Central Florida on Sunday morning before they return to Pittsburgh.
Division III Men’s Ice Hockey
This past Friday marked the last time the Panther seniors would skate on their home ice at the Airport Ice Arena in Moon Township as the hosted Penn State West.
Their teammates made sure they went out with a win.
Captain Ty Heller was the only senior to record any points in the game. He finished with a goal and two assists, but that is in large part to the performance of his two line mates.
Zach Cain and Luke Heller combined for five goals and five assists in the Panthers 6-5 win over Penn State West.
Cain scored the game’s first two goals less than three minutes after the puck was dropped in the first period. That 2-0 lead would set the tone for the Panthers in a game that they would never trail.
Pitt went on to score two more first-period goals before the Nittany Lions notched two of their own to make it 4-2 heading into the second intermission.
The Nittany Lions came out of the break with more fire than the Panthers and knotted the score up at four halfway through the second period. However, Pitt responded and fired 17 shots on goal in the period as Cain and the younger Heller, Luke, each scored in the period.
Despite giving up a late second-period goal, the Panthers defended their one-goal lead for the entire third period and held on to win the game 6-5.
Last Saturday, in the Panthers season finale, Pitt fell short against the playoff bound Pitt-Johnstown IceCats 6-2.
Despite falling behind 2-0 early in the first period, the Panthers battled back, and Ty Heller scored his final goal as a Panther on a powerplay. That goal gave him a team-high 20 goals for the season.
The last goal of the Pitt season came early in the second period, and it was freshman Sean Judge’s lone tally of the year. The IceCats proved to be too much for the Panthers, scoring four more goals than Pitt could manage, holding on to win 6-2.
The Panthers finished their season with a 7-13-3 record.
