A Halloween mix tape to highlight your party

It’s Halloween, so that means it’s time to get spooky. This mix should get you in the right… It’s Halloween, so that means it’s time to get spooky. This mix should get you in the right mood, with a few classics and a few songs that might give your mix a little off-kilter feel.

1. Bernard Hermann — “Twisted Nerve” — For the Kill Bill Vol. I soundtrack, Quentin Tarantino went with the Alfred Hitchcock route. Good for a starting track.

2. Radiohead — “We Suck Young Blood” — The spooky bridge freakout by Thom Yorke fits wonderfully with the lyrics: “Are you sweet? / Are you fresh? / Are you strung up by the wrists? / We want the young blood.”

3. Opeth — “Closure” — A metal band? Even when they are acoustic, their riffs are downright evil sounding. Lyrically, it’s about dying. And for those afraid of metal, there are no Cookie Monster growling vocals; it’s completely sung. Total Metal(loween).

4. Bjork — “Ancestors” — Probably the most “messed up” track on Medulla, it’s strictly acapella and her gasps in the background could be of fright or orgasm (and it pans from side to side).

5. Twisted Sister — “Burn in Hell” — Probably the lesser known of their songs (“We’re not gonna take it” takes precedence), this song was evil. Even better is if you can find the Children of Bodom cover of this song.

6. Aphex Twin — “Come to Daddy” — “I want your soul / I will eat your soul.” Enough said. Deranged noises are also a bonus. Try the “Little Lord Faulteroy Mix,” as it has this creepy little child mumbling various things all over it, and gets more subtle (and creepy) as the song progresses.

7. GWAR — “Gor-Gor Theme” — Something ridiculous had to be on the list. It doesn’t get any more ridiculous than GWAR.

8. Kronos Quartet/Clint Mansell — “Lux Aeterna” — Well, this is the longest version of the most memorable song from the “Requiem for a Dream” soundtrack. If anyone has seen the movie, they can understand how claustrophobic most of the tracks felt anyway, so pick any from here for a truly stomach-churning feeling.

9. Pat Benatar — “Hell is for Children” — Many people mentioned that this song scared them when they were younger. Let’s see if it still holds up after all these years.

10. Slayer — “Reign in Blood” — Halloween just isn’t Halloween without Slayer. This is considered one of their best songs for a good reason, and this track is a perfect closer.

This is an untraditional mix for your Halloween, so freak out your friends with a bit of indie cred and some classic homage too.
