I scream, you scream, we all scream for what’s certainly the best-known, most decorated ice cream in Oakland.

Recently ranked fifth-best ice cream nationwide by USA Today, Dave ‘amp; Andy’s is an Oakland phenomenon. Any warm spring or summer day will feature a long line draping down Atwood Street outside Dave and Andy’s.

Clumps of students and families will form a line yards outside the door, waiting to see what the day’s flavors are. Among the standards, such as cookies and cream and chocolate chip cookie dough, Dave and Andy’s big blackboard of options always features something new or different, like pumpkin pie flavored ice cream. And for sugar or fat conscious patrons, Dave and Andy’s always offers fat and sugar free frozen yogurt options.

The standard order, a single scope waffle cone, is $2.25. Additionally, Dave and Andy’s stocks Stewart’s sodas and prepackaged cartons of the ice cream.

On a hot day in Oakland, a soft-serve cone from DeLites hits the spot. The little ice cream stand on Centre Avenue serves a variety of soft-serve creations, from twist cones to sundaes and dipped cones covered with crunchy toppings to hard and creamy ice cream. This little stand is a wholesome place to pick up a tasty cone and let any summer care melt away just like the rivulets of soft-serve running down the side of the cone.

Oakland is a tough crowd when it comes to ice cream. The bad news is Tastee Freez is up against the popular Dave ‘amp; Andy’s. The good news is Tastee Freez offers a variety of items Dave ‘amp; Andy’s doesn’t.

Tastee Freez boasts a long list of items such as smoothies, slush puppies, fruit parfaits and coffee coolers. The most glaring difference between the two stores? Soft serve ice cream – Tastee Freez has it and Dave ‘amp; Andy’s doesn’t. A customer can even jazz up a soft serve vanilla cone with a Flavor Burst, which is a swirl of sweet flavoring such as butter pecan or cool mint. A two-topping sundae is only $1.59 and a milkshake is only $2.80, compared to the rival’s $3.25 shake.

When the store is open, a sign on the sidewalk displays an ice cream cone with a Chucky-like grin on its face. Don’t let the cone scare you away – go inside and let Tastee Freez know there is room for more than one ice cream shop in Oakland.
