Life is good this Labor Day weekend, as the South Park Fairgrounds come alive with the sights, sounds, and savory aromas of the 17th annual Allegheny Rib Cook-Off. Along with the delicious spread offered by the 12 award-winning ribs specialists, the Cook-Off promises fun activities for all.

What’s not to love about hourly pig races? Or try your own racing skills at Victory Lane NASCAR Microreality Racing. With several satellite feeds covering the games, hard-core sports fans can rest assured that the weekend’s NCAA and NFL action won’t be missed. Have sports memorabilia on hand for a chance to have some sports all-stars autograph them.

Admirers of the arts will appreciate chainsaw sculptor Joseph King and browse the crafts on display in the Homegrown Crafts Fair. Lucky collectors are sure to score some antique treasures at the Fleatique.

Live music will play throughout the weekend. Friday brings Joe Patrick, Gashouse Band, PovertyNeck Hillbillies and Confederate Railroad. On Saturday, Shari Richards and the Buzz Poets perform, as do classic rock greats B.T.O. Old School Band and One Hit Wonder play on Sunday and the final act that night is Blood, Sweat and Tears. On Monday, check out Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals and Jonny Angel ‘ the Halos.

Proceeds from the Cook-Off benefit the Mon-Yough Riverfront Entertainment and Cultural Council, which provides free cultural programs for economically challenged communities in Allegheny County.
