His “George Washington,” performed almost solely by non-actors, is plotless but unforgettable, a film you might recall and wonder if you’d dreamt it.
“All the Real Girls” is a similar marvel. Green has professional actors this time around ? Zooey Deschanel and co-writer Paul Schneider play nervous young lovers in a North Carolina mill town ? but he’s still creating the most naturalistic cinema out there. His style is poetic; everything is stripped down to tone.
The director’s insistence on giving every last character a scene in which to shine could be called indulgent, but there isn’t a single moment I’d rather see omitted. They’re all too lovely.
