The victim had his back to the robber, who reached into the victim’s pocket with one hand. He held a knife in his other hand. The robber took a fold of bills and ran away. The victim was not injured.
This is not an isolated incident, according to Schubert. “We have had a lot of robberies in Oakland recently.
Schubert said city police are now trying to establish a pattern.
Pitt police have issued several crime prevention tips to help prevent future incidents.
According to the advisory, street robbers typically ask for directions, money or the time of day. Police suggest that people not stop and talk to total strangers who try to stop them. When walking in an unsafe area, one should ignore a suspicious character, cross the street and run as fast as possible. The advisory also suggests that making noise is a good deterrent because street robbers don’t want to attract attention.
Most importantly, according to the crime prevention tips, “never walk alone late at night – stay in well-lit, well-traveled areas.”
“Use common sense,” Pitt police Chief Tim Delaney said. “Pay attention to the crime prevention tips.”
