Bush appointed Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge to the newly created cabinet-level position as the director of the Office of Homeland Security.
Ridge will resign his post Oct. 5 to take on the appointment. Lt. Gov. Mark Schweiker will replace Ridge when he steps down.
