Graduate students performing an experiment in Chevron Science Center Monday caused a small… Graduate students performing an experiment in Chevron Science Center Monday caused a small explosion that knocked ceiling tiles to the floor.

Pitt spokesman Robert Hill described the lunch-hour incident as “relatively inconsequential,” adding that no one was injured.

The explosion was caused by students studying a type of synthesis using non-toxic chemicals. The building was briefly evacuated before people were allowed to re-enter.

Hill said the University responded appropriately to prevent further incidents.

“You never know when something’s going to happen, but [the University is] aware of what happened and all appropriate reactions did occur,” Hill said.
