Pitt gymnastics (6-10-1, 5-7-1 EAGL) won a match against West Virginia (2-7, 0-6 Big 12) on Friday night, beating the Mountaineers by a final score of 195.100-194.675 at the Fitzgerald Field House. However, the team couldn’t maintain momentum and ultimately lost on Sunday by a margin of 196.100-193.400.

After Pitt gymnastics (6-10-1, 5-7-1 EAGL) lost its first match in the three-meet series of the Backyard Brawl, the Panthers came back with a vengeance in match two on Friday night, beating West Virginia (2-7, 0-6 Big 12) by a final score of 195.100-194.675 at the Fitzgerald Field House. But despite their opponent's momentum, the Mountaineers turned out a compelling win on Sunday by a margin of 196.100-193.400.

Miller, Coca star in all-around for Pitt gymnastics despite loss to WVU

Pitt gymnastics (5-9-1) took the floor of the Fitzgerald Field House for the first of three dual meets against rival West Virginia (1-6 overall, 0-6 Big 12) on Friday night. The Panthers were unable to overcome dazzling floor routines from the Mountaineers in a 195.900-194.175 loss, but an event win for junior Olivia Miller and Coca’s first trip through the all-around category softened the sting of defeat.
Redshirt sophomore Micky Phillippi improved to 8-0 on the year during Pitt’s 29-6 victory over West Virginia.

Backyard Maul: Pitt wrestling dominates WVU 29-6

No. 10 Pitt wrestling strolled out of WVU Coliseum with a dominant victory that saw its wrestlers pick up eight wins, three of them as major decisions and one more as a technical fall.

75 miles and different shades of blue and gold. Off of the hardwood, not much separates West Virginia (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) and Pitt (2-2, 1-0 ACC). But on Friday night, a mere 20 minutes of basketball proved how big the gap remains between the two hated rivals.

Facing off against a team known for its suffocating defense, the young Panthers’ inexperience was on full display in a 69-59 loss to West Virginia Saturday afternoon in the 186th edition of the Backyard Brawl.

Rivalry week: Examining the shaky future of Pitt vs. Penn State

In 2016, the Pitt-Penn State rivalry was rebooted after a 16 year hiatus. Although only playing for the last two seasons, it seems as if the rivalry may reach an expiration date soon - which could actually benefit Pitt. Working hard to schedule the rivalry game every year doesn't seem like a worthy investment for Pitt.
