Pitt swimming, track, gymnastics set records during busy weekend

Pitt athletics powers on despite COVID-19 postponements over winter break

Pitt students departed campus after final exams in mid-December, but Pitt athletes remained with their teams as winter sports began their seasons in earnest. Some Panther teams had to navigate COVID-19-related postponements during the holidays.

Pitt Program Council hosted “A Conversation with Aly Raisman” on Monday night in the William Pitt Union, where the gymnast opened up about her career and her experience with sexual abuse on the USA Gymnastics team.
The Pitt Athletics primary Twitter account had 17 tweets in February surrounding Black History Month, with a greater volume of content coming toward the end of the month.

Pitt Athletics alumni said they saw the athletic department bring attention to Black History Month this year for the first time in a significant way, but shared many concerns they hope the department will address in the future.

Weekend sports recap: Trio of Pitt gymnasts compete at NCAA regionals

Pitt sports had an eventful weekend, with the gymnastics team finishing its season at the National Collegiate Women’s Gymnastics Regional Meet in Morgantown, West Virginia, volleyball concluding its regular season with a pair of conference matchups and softball continuing its difficult season at home in a series against Louisville.
Senior gymnast Jordan Ceccarini tied for first in floor exercise with a score of 9.90.

The Petersen Events Center hosted the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championship for the first time in 17 years Saturday night. The seven competing teams — No. 1 NC State, No. 2 Towson, No. 4 Temple, No. 5 North Carolina, No. 6 Pitt, No. 7 George Washington and No. 8 LIU — battled it out to see who would wear the League's crown after the irregular 2021 season.
Senior Felix Wolter finished in fourth place in the men’s heptathlon with a final score of 5907 in the NCAA track and field indoor championships this weekend, earning him first team All-American honors.

Track and field’s Felix Wolter and Greg Lauray headlined this weekend of Pitt athletics, each of them earning All-American titles for their performances in the heptathlon and the high jump, respectively. Elsewhere, Pitt baseball took part in multiple slugfests against West Virginia, and Pitt gymnastics split a series against West Virginia.
Pitt gymnastics (6-10-1, 5-7-1 EAGL) won a match against West Virginia (2-7, 0-6 Big 12) on Friday night, beating the Mountaineers by a final score of 195.100-194.675 at the Fitzgerald Field House. However, the team couldn’t maintain momentum and ultimately lost on Sunday by a margin of 196.100-193.400.

After Pitt gymnastics (6-10-1, 5-7-1 EAGL) lost its first match in the three-meet series of the Backyard Brawl, the Panthers came back with a vengeance in match two on Friday night, beating West Virginia (2-7, 0-6 Big 12) by a final score of 195.100-194.675 at the Fitzgerald Field House. But despite their opponent's momentum, the Mountaineers turned out a compelling win on Sunday by a margin of 196.100-193.400.

Miller, Coca star in all-around for Pitt gymnastics despite loss to WVU

Pitt gymnastics (5-9-1) took the floor of the Fitzgerald Field House for the first of three dual meets against rival West Virginia (1-6 overall, 0-6 Big 12) on Friday night. The Panthers were unable to overcome dazzling floor routines from the Mountaineers in a 195.900-194.175 loss, but an event win for junior Olivia Miller and Coca’s first trip through the all-around category softened the sting of defeat.
The East Atlantic Gymnastics League announced Thursday that Pitt will host the 2021 EAGL Championship, taking place at the Petersen Events Center on Saturday, March 20.
