Women’s basketball, men’s soccer wins highlight busy Thanksgiving week for Pitt athletics

Pitt broke to observe the Thanksgiving holiday last week. But the Pitt Athletics department still had games to play. Here’s how each team fared over the course of the week.

Weekend Sports Recap: Cross-country sets program record, volleyball wins big and more

Men’s cross-country placed fifth at Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Friday, the highest finish at that competition in Pitt history. Volleyball and wrestling also picked up wins in a busy weekend for Pitt athletics.

Coming off its best finish at the NCAA National Championship since 1970, Pitt wrestling kicked off its 2021-22 campaign with the Blue and Gold exhibition dual meet Thursday night at the Fitzgerald Field House.

Punxsutawney Phil may have had Pitt in mind when he predicted six weeks of winter before one of the most “beautiful and brightest” springs ever. The Panthers got the spring started in great fashion with a slew of accolades across multiple sports.

Pitt wrestling building success around local products

The five Panthers who competed in the NCAA Championships have one thing in common — they’re all from Pennsylvania. In fact, 27 of the 31 wrestlers on Pitt’s roster hail from Pennsylvania. Pitt’s head coach, Keith Gavin, is also from Pennsylvania and had a successful career as a Panther wrestler.

Baseball, volleyball, wrestling highlight another busy weekend of Pitt sports

Pitt baseball and volleyball capped off a packed weekend of Pitt sports with wins over ACC opponents. Earlier in the weekend, Pitt wrestling finished 11th in the NCAA championships.
Two-time defending ACC champion Jake Wenzel (9-1) won 1-0 in his opening match against Drexels Evan Barczak (6-3) on March 18. Wenzel was also Pitt’s highest individual seed since Max Thomusseit (2 at 184) in 2015.

Returning wrestlers fight to keep All-American status at 2021 NCAA Championships

Pitt wrestling, swimming compete in ACC Championship meets

Pitt athletics enjoyed an eventful and successful weekend. Men’s swimming competed in Greensboro, North Carolina, during the second round of the ACC Championships as the wrestling team competed in Raleigh, North Carolina, for ACC Championships of its own. One state over, the track and field team also competed for its conference championship in Clemson, South Carolina.
Pitt wrestling fell to Virginia Tech 27-12, finishing the shortened season at 3-4 overall and 1-4 in conference.

Wins in Track and field, wrestling highlight weekend of Pitt sports
