When the Pitt men’s soccer team headed to Rhode Island to take on the Providence College Friars last Saturday, it still hadn’t earned its first conference win of the season.

Unfortunately for the Panthers, their losing streak continues.

After a scoreless first half, Michael Tuohy gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead off a free kick in the 57th minute.

Following the sophomore’s goal, Providence (3-7-2 overall, 1-3-0 Big East) would tie up the game at one following an unassisted goal by Wilder Arboleda.

Arboleda would score again in the 85th minute, giving the home team a 2-1 lead with five minutes to play.

But as the Panthers (6-6-2) have done many times this year, they rallied late.

In the 85th minute, redshirt sophomore Cory Werth collected a loose ball and equalized for the Panthers, sending the game into overtime.

But the night would belong to one man: Arboleda. After scoring two goals in regulation, he received a beautiful cross from Thomas Ballenthin that the redshirt junior headed into the net, past a diving Lee Johnston.

The loss dropped the Panthers — with just three games remaining on their schedule — to 0-5-0 in Big East play. They have two home contests against top-10 opposition before they travel to Villanova.

The next game for the Panthers is Wednesday at home against the No. 4 Marquette Golden Eagles. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Petersen Sports Complex.
