Consol Energy Center will host the 2013 Frozen Four hockey tournament, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The event is similar to basketball’s Final Four, and typically the four remaining teams in tournament head to the Frozen Four location some weekend in April and play on Thursday evening. Then the championship game is held Saturday night.

This is just the latest in a string of events that were selected to be held at the new Penguins arena. Consol Energy Center will also host the DIRECTV SEC/Big East Invitational, a college basketball doubleheader featuring Rutgers vs. Auburn and Pitt vs. Tennessee.

The arena will also host first and second round games of the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

The 2013 Frozen Four bid was hosted by Robert Morris with help from the Penguins and VisitPittsburgh.

Last year Boston College defeated Wisconsin to win the Frozen Four at Detroit’s Ford Field. Next year it will be held in St. Paul, Minn., and 2012’s will be in Tampa, Fla.
