E-mails with an attachment titled, “The message contains Unicode characters and has been sent as a binary attachment,” may have a worm attached to them that can cause problems for computer users, according to an e-mail sent to faculty members from Tim Fitzgerald of Computing Services and Systems Development on Wednesday.

According to The New York Times, the technical wording of the attachment leads many computer users to believe that it is legitimate and they are thus willing to download it.

The subject line of the message usually reads “Mail Delivery System” or “Mail Transaction Failed.”

CSSD encourages everyone to delete suspect e-mails immediately without opening them.

When a legitimate notice of a failed e-mail is sent from Pitt’s server, it does not have an attachment on it and will also have more information in the subject line than “Mail Delivery System” or “Mail Transaction Failed.
