Tyre Young, one of the Pitt football team’s defensive tackles, was shot in Aliquippa early… Tyre Young, one of the Pitt football team’s defensive tackles, was shot in Aliquippa early Saturday morning outside of I-Hops bar.

According to a press release by the Aliquippa Police Department, Young was involved in a fight with five men whom he later said he did not know. During the fight, at least one shot was discharged, according to the police, wounding Young in the upper back.

Young was transported to Aliquppa Community Hospital that night.

There have been no arrests involving the fight, which occurred at approximately 12:45 a.m. on Sunday.

According to Sgt. Don Couch of the Aliquippa police, the officer in charge of the investigation, “it’s not unusual” for a problem to originate in or near the Beaver County bar.

Couch said when Young was taken to the hospital, marijuana was found on him and that he would be charged with possession of marijuana when the time for filing charges came.

“Charges will be filed,” Couch said. “It’s just a matter of time.”

Couch said before any charges are filed, police will try to find out more about the other five men involved in the altercation.

Couch also said Young had a holster on him when he was taken to the hospital.

“I don’t know if there was a gun or not,” he said, adding that the investigation has no timetable as of now.

The athletics department could not be reached for comment over the weekend.

Young, 19, of Braddock, was suspended for the first game of this season after a fight in training camp practice. In the second game, a 14-12 loss to Alabama A’M, he broke his ankle and was sidelined for the rest of the season.

In last year’s Tangerine Bowl victory over North Carolina State, Young returned a fumble for a touchdown.

Aliquippa Community Hospital said there was no information about Young in the system as of Monday night.
