Opinion | You don’t need to party in college to have a good time

Opinion | You don’t need to party in college to have a good time

By Livia LaMarca, Assistant Opinions Editor August 7, 2023
I thought I had to live my college days in some predestined, “stereotypical” way or else I wouldn’t have a fulfilling time. There is nothing wrong with spending your time in college like that — many do. But just like it is okay to party and get drunk on the neighboring frat’s mysterious jungle juice, it is okay to have little interest. It is okay to not want that at all, actually.
Taylor Swift performs during "The Eras Tour," Friday, May 5, 2023, at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn.

Opinion | Time to reevaluate the Swiftie identity if we can’t agree on changing that line

By Anna Ehlers, Contributing Editor July 11, 2023
If Swifties really think they deserve to continue Swift’s regrettable legacy of slut shaming someone, then something has gone very wrong, and we all need a wake up call.

Rather than ignore the presence of intolerant behaviors, as my school did, we can work to undo the cycles of prejudice from the bottom up — through education.
The Atlantic Ocean.

Opinion | It wasn’t five people lost at sea, it was more than six hundred

By Sofia Uriagereka-Herburger, Staff Columnist July 11, 2023
The reporting on the five wealthy passengers of the OceanGate submarine unfairly outweighed the coverage of the 700 refugees aboard the capsized vessel in Greece.
Opinion | Why people who say college “was the best four years of my life” may be right

In college, the list of people you know stretches indefinitely — roommates, their partners, classmates, coworkers— it’s a massive web. But as we get older, that web often condenses until it eventually dwindles into your own remote family. While it’s easy to pass this phenomenon off as “becoming an adult” and “getting older,” these statements ignore the fact that we have structurally ensured that loneliness is an outcome of our lives.
Opinion | Birth control access is still a problem — even in 2023

Opinion | Birth control access is still a problem — even in 2023

By Emily O'Neil, Staff Columnist June 27, 2023
Birth control has changed since its initial creation and is now, finally, less stigmatized in society. However, unfortunately this does not mean it is easy for individuals who have a menstrual cycle to get access to birth control.
The Allegheny County Jail Oversight Board meeting at the County Courthouse on May 18.

Opinion | Allegheny County Jail and local detainment centers continue to fail our communities

By India Krug, Senior Staff Columnist June 21, 2023
Three incarcerated people have died in Pittsburgh since May — though you might not know it even after attending recent jail oversight board meetings. As the number of incarcerated people who have died increases, so, it seems, do county and jail officials’ inaction. Community members, former jail staff and incarcerated individuals continue to say the same thing—it is traumatizing to be in the Allegheny County jail.
Opinion | Fanwork is not bad

Opinion | Fanwork is not bad

By Jameson Keebler, Staff Columnist June 20, 2023
Fanfiction itself is not the problem. When it is consumed on the platforms that were made for it, fanwork can have a positive impact on the creators and consumers. Even if it is cringey or embarrassing for some people, if it exists in its own sphere then there really is no harm in it, especially if it makes other fans happy.
Opinion | Finding yourself is not a one-size-fits-all concept

Opinion | Finding yourself is not a one-size-fits-all concept

By Emily O'Neil, Staff Columnist June 13, 2023
I recently realized that I’m trying — and struggling — to find myself. It’s not as straightforward or preconceived as websites try to make it. There is no one set path for everyone to follow. Through my own personal trials, I’ve come to realize that, like most things, everyone's individual experience dictates their own path.
Opinion | SZA’s SOS album is a representation of all stages of a relationship

Opinion | SZA’s SOS album is a representation of all stages of a relationship

By Ashanti McLaurin, Staff Columnist June 13, 2023
How I perceive dating is in five stages — crush, talking stage, situationship, relationship and then the dreadful fear of the break-up. SZA’s new album, SOS, released in December 2022, is an album that is a musical representation of the stages of love.
