Pittsburgh is home to many theater companies, such as Harris Theater, that had to stop production when COVID-19 was first declared a pandemic and Gov. Tom Wolf ordered a statewide shutdown. This shutdown forced the companies to halt their public shows and find new ways to bring theatre to their audiences.

Two Pitt alumni — Greg Heller-LaBelle, who graduated in 2006, and Brett Taylor, who graduated in 1999 — own their own breweries after starting out as home brewers.
Brew Gentlemen is a craft brewery located in Braddock. Matt Katase and Asa Foster, both Carnegie Mellon University graduates, opened the brewery in 2014.

According to the American Psychological Association, 22% of people reported binge drinking in February 2020, compared to 27% in April 2020.

Students report drinking less during pandemic

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the added stress, fear and uncertainty has led many to develop new habits as a way to cope. But for many Pitt students, the new standard is drinking less.
Mellinger’s Beer Distributor was voted the best beer distributor in Oakland, according to The Pitt News’ readership. The store switched management in February after the current owners, Neil and Neha Shah, bought it from Diana Bellisario, who owned and operated the distributor for just three months shy of 30 years.

Hemingway’s Cafe announced last Friday that it will reopen March 31, with modified hours to account for the state’s current 11 p.m. curfew on alcohol sales. The reopening comes more than a year after the bar, located on Forbes Avenue, initially closed on March 14, 2020.
