Status of ‘transgenderism and womanhood’ debate at Pitt uncertain after participant drops out

Deirdre McCloskey has dropped out of a debate at Pitt against political commentator Michael Knowles on “transgenderism and womanhood,” set for next Tuesday. She said Knowles is “hate-mongering” and “uninterested in finding the truth.”

Pitt’s Board of Trustees named Gabel, the current president of the University of Minnesota, on Monday as Pitt’s chancellor starting in July. Following her appointment, Gabel answered questions at a press conference about her stance on unionization, police relations and “anti-trans” speaker events on campus.

About 200 students protested at the intersection of Forbes Avenue and Bigelow Boulevard Monday afternoon, chanting “hate speech isn’t free, it costs lives'' and carrying signs with phrases such as “save trans lives.”
