‘We need the support of the community’: Greek life leaders work to prevent sexual misconduct after former IFC president resigns

After the former IFC president resigned in October following a controversial statement about a sexual assault on campus, leaders in Greek life and Pitt staff are contemplating the best methods for discussing sexual misconduct within their organizations.

Interfraternity Council board member speaks out on ‘absurd,’ ‘vile’ statement IFC posted last week on reported sexual assault in the Cathedral of Learning

A now-deleted statement from IFC regarding a reported sexual assault contained language such as “I believe that a man’s life is difficult.” An IFC board member called it thinly-veiled “misogyny” and “chauvinism,” and urged the president, Michael Liu, to resign.
Active fraternities and sororities have been conducting virtual recruitment this year.

Amid a crackdown on Oakland parties and the student organizations hosting them, some groups are holding themselves to a higher standard. John Altvater, the vice president of recruitment for the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity, said his chapter has closely followed COVID-19 health rules and encourages all Greek life chapters and other organizations to follow them.

Several student organizations on campus held events in hopes of encouraging voter turnout on election day. According to Adwait Shukla, president of Pitt’s Interfraternity Council and senior adviser of the South Asian Student Association, “If you want candidates who represent your interests, the midterms are where you should vote.”
