Wins in Track and field, wrestling highlight weekend of Pitt sports

Pitt’s weekend in athletics saw cancellations in softball and soccer. However, the weekend was not without its standout performances. Wrestling’s Jake Wentzel and track and field’s Evan Addison and Greg Lauray did Pitt sports proud.

Top-ranked men’s soccer steals 2-1 ACC Tournament win over Duke

The No.1 Pitt Panthers opened the ACC Tournament in Raleigh, North Carolina, with a strong 2-1 win over Duke. It was unclear how Pitt would play without star first-year forward Bertin Jacquesson, who missed the game due to coronavirus-related protocols, but the Panther offense still found enough success to pull out a win.
First-year midfielder Emily Yaple (10) led the Panthers with five shots, scoring on none during Pitt's 1-0 loss to Wake Forest on Sunday. With the loss to Demon Deacons, the Panthers will miss the 2020 ACC Women's Soccer Tournament and end their season with a 9-5-0 record.

Weekend Recap: Soccer and cross country complete pivotal weekend

Soccer outshines preseason favorites volleyball early

In addition to Pitt football’s headline-grabbing win over conference rival Louisville on Saturday, other Panther teams had a busy and largely triumphant weekend. Both men’s and women’s soccer picked up road wins, taking down Notre Dame and The Citadel, respectively. Pitt volleyball did not experience that same success, though, as the team fell to Syracuse twice in back-to-back nights.

Panthers soccer open seasons in dominant fashion

In addition to Pitt football’s headline-grabbing win over conference rival Syracuse on Saturday, other Panthers teams boasted a dominant weekend. Men’s soccer routed Louisville on Saturday in its final home exhibition game before beginning the regular season, while women’s soccer traveled to Navy and picked up its fourth consecutive win.

ACC announces delay for some fall sports

The Atlantic Coast Conference Board of Directors announced Thursday afternoon that the beginning of fall Olympic sports will be delayed until Sept. 1. Pitt’s men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and cross country are among the affected sports. ACC field hockey programs will also be subject to the delay, but will not apply to Pitt, which does not have a program.

Students are away, athletes play: Pitt stacks victories over Thanksgiving break

Pitt sports had a busy Thanksgiving break, with many games bridging the week-long gap. Volleyball concluded regular season play in dominating fashion, while both the men’s and women’s basketball teams took part in traditional early-season tournaments.
Pitt soccer announced last week that Edward Kizza, the second highest goal scorer in program history, is no longer on the team.
