Nino Bonaccorsi makes history for Pitt wrestling, despite poor team performance

Nino Bonaccorsi dominated the NCAA tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma this weekend, winning the 197-pound national championship. But the team as a whole failed to meet expectations, despite Bonaccorsi’s performance.

Nino Bonaccorsi becomes first Panther to win a national title since 2008

Redshirt senior Nino Bonaccorsi became the first Panther since 2008 to win a national title. He defeated senior Tanner Sloan of South Dakota State 5-3 in the NCAA final on Saturday.

Nino Bonaccorsi and Micky Phillippi reflect on storied careers for Pitt wrestling

Redshirt seniors Nino Bonaccorsi and Micky Phillippi both joined Pitt wrestling in 2017. Over the course of the past six and half years, the duo have cemented themselves as program legends.

Pitt wrestling building success around local products

The five Panthers who competed in the NCAA Championships have one thing in common — they’re all from Pennsylvania. In fact, 27 of the 31 wrestlers on Pitt’s roster hail from Pennsylvania. Pitt’s head coach, Keith Gavin, is also from Pennsylvania and had a successful career as a Panther wrestler.
Senior Blaise Vera finished third in the 100-yard freestyle and will represent Pitt in the NCAA Championships from March 24-27.

Pitt wrestling, swimming compete in ACC Championship meets

Pitt athletics enjoyed an eventful and successful weekend. Men’s swimming competed in Greensboro, North Carolina, during the second round of the ACC Championships as the wrestling team competed in Raleigh, North Carolina, for ACC Championships of its own. One state over, the track and field team also competed for its conference championship in Clemson, South Carolina.
