As students moved in and prepared for their classes, Pitt athletes were already hard at work preparing for their season openers, highlighted by the Backyard Brawl’s 11-year football hiatus ending. Winter sports hit home stretch during busy weekend

Pitt athletics was busy over the weekend, as many winter sports teams hit the home stretch of their regular seasons and prepare for postseason competition.
Senior Felix Wolter, who earned All-American honors recently, finished fourth place in the 100-meter dash and seventh in the long jump in Knoxville this weekend as the Panthers capped off the Tennessee Relays. Pitt will head to Virginia next weekend for the Virginia Challenge meet on Friday, April 16, and Saturday, April 17.

Weekend sports recap: Baseball and track and field make up for softball woes

The weekend saw a rough performance for Pitt softball, but strong performances from Pitt track and field and a sweep from the baseball team made up for it.
Three Panthers qualified for the NCAA regional meet — junior Katie Chamberlain, sophomore Lauren Beckwith, and graduate Katrina Coca (pictured). Chamberlain was scratched before the meet began due to injury, while Beckwith and Coca scored 9.9 and 9.7, respectively, on the bars.

Weekend sports recap: Trio of Pitt gymnasts compete at NCAA regionals

Pitt sports had an eventful weekend, with the gymnastics team finishing its season at the National Collegiate Women’s Gymnastics Regional Meet in Morgantown, West Virginia, volleyball concluding its regular season with a pair of conference matchups and softball continuing its difficult season at home in a series against Louisville.
Senior Blaise Vera earned First-team All-American honors with his performance in the 50-yard freestyle. He finished in seventh place, earning his team 12 points.

Weekend Sports Recap: Swimming earns victories at NCAA Championships

A double overtime win for men’s soccer and multiple top-10 placements for track and field highlighted this weekend of Pitt sports. Panthers swimming and diving also concluded its season with a 26th-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
Senior Felix Wolter finished in fourth place in the men’s heptathlon with a final score of 5907 in the NCAA track and field indoor championships this weekend, earning him first team All-American honors.

Men’s heptathlon highlights busy weekend of Pitt sports

Track and field’s Felix Wolter and Greg Lauray headlined this weekend of Pitt athletics, each of them earning All-American titles for their performances in the heptathlon and the high jump, respectively. Elsewhere, Pitt baseball took part in multiple slugfests against West Virginia, and Pitt gymnastics split a series against West Virginia.
The Pitt Gymnastics team earned its first victory of the season Sunday afternoon by narrowly beating out NC State and Towson with a final score of 195.700.

Gymnastics, swimming and diving take home big wins

The weekend was a mixed bag for Pitt sports teams. The high-powered wrestling team continued to struggle in a tight loss against Virginia, even as the track and field team finished last at the Notre Dame invitational. Nevertheless, Pitt swimming and diving furthered its unprecedented success in a dual meet sweep, and the gymnastics team earned its first win of the season.
Pitt womens' basketball fell 72-68 to Miami Thursday night, its first game in 32 days.

Diving sinks Duquesne, other Pitt teams disappoint over weekend

The high-powered Pitt wrestling team took its first loss of the season in a blowout. Meanwhile, women’s basketball and gymnastics both suffered close losses against favored opponents. That said, the women’s diving team remained a bright spot by picking up a dual meet win over Duquesne.
