Blind Devotion

By Emily Pinigis, For The Pitt News

With a tongue like a silver blade,

He effortlessly entrances and seduces

That velvety voice beckons not to be afraid

Always a gentleman

I am none the wiser

I am under his spell of nightshade

His precious little puppet

I’ll play my part in his charade

Captivating sovereign

I need him to guide me

My temporal mind completely decayed

Prim and proper, I follow in his shadow

Together we waltz; the sinful masquerade

Always a gentleman

           I am none the wiser

Beautiful demon that offered his aid

Only to taint my humanity

And leave me to feel betrayed

Captivating sovereign

I need him to guide me

Yet somewhere I know this demonic trade

Will not be worth my strife

I don’t want to let go of his suit of suede

Always a gentleman

           I am none the wiser

I let myself be betrayed

So torn between beauty and morality

I long to stay with him, decade after decade

Captivating Sovereign

I need him to guide me

My dear darling devil, delayed

His shining promise of closure,

Leaving me alone and dismayed

Always a gentleman

           I was none the wiser

What a lie of a saint he portrayed

Only a damnable fool would fall

Into the beguiling trap he laid

Captivating sovereign

I am discarded as hell-hound fodder
