The Cathedral Café, which houses The Roost, The One Sushi, and Pom & Honey, closed on March 6 and will reopen this fall.
On March 2, the University announced that the Cathedral Café was closing temporarily for renovations. The café will return with upgraded back-of-house equipment, improved kitchen workflows and updated operational systems and dining options.
University spokesperson Jared Stonesifer said the renovated space will have three dining options — The Roost, The One Sushi and Handhelds + Pizza. The café will also have grab-and-go options, including Pom & Honey-inspired meals, according to Stonesifer.
The new dining option, Handhelds + Pizza, will have chef-crafted sandwiches and focaccia-based pizzas, according to Stonesifer. The Roost will introduce new sides, rotisserie options and family-style grab-and-go meals, and continue to offer fried chicken.
Stonesifer said the renovations to the café will provide a faster and more reliable dining experience.
“These improvements will allow us to better handle growing student populations, expand menu options and introduce new dining concepts in the future,” Stonesifer said.
The café’s staff, which is composed of 14 members, works for Compass Group, Pitt’s food contractor. SEIU Local 32BJ, the service workers’ union that represents the staff, reached a mutual agreement with Compass to keep staff members employed and avoid layoffs, according to Pete Schmidt, Western Pennsylvania district director for SEIU Local 32BJ.
Stonesifer said Pitt Eats “intends to welcome [café] staff back when the location reopens.”
