With a new year comes a crop of new faces in any musical genre, and in 2003, rock is no exception. This year, Pittsburgh will experience the new sound of screamy “emo” when Finch comes to town along with controversial rockers The Used, pop-punkers The Movielife and the soothing sounds of My Chemical Romance.

Finch has been on the move since late 2001, and made a name for themselves with the release of What It Is To Burn, which featured some extremely heartfelt music that only a band of this caliber could put out. Also, the record featured two tracks in which Daryl Palumbo of arguably one of the most innovative bands around, Glassjaw, made cameos.

The Used, who are often compared to Glassjaw, bring a unique sound to the independent music scene. They are not without controversy, though, with rumors of the lead singer dating Kelly Osbourne (which is true), to scuffles with Zwan frontman and former Smashing Pumpkins legend Billy Corgan. But that shouldn’t stop the masses of fans who have been following them around from release of their CD, to the music video for “The Taste of Ink” being aired on MTV.

The Movielife should be nothing new to the Pittsburgh scene. These guys are constantly touring with their fun live show and always promise a good time for fans. Expect lots of stage-diving and singing along, with plenty of melodic vocals to back up their optimistic sound. But if anything, make sure to be on the lookout for My Chemical Romance.

I have a feeling these guys are on to something big, and it can’t hurt to have this amalgamation of some of the more popular acts in the scene to help them break out and establish an already steadily-growing fanbase. If punk, emo or hardcore is in your veins, make sure to make it out to this show; it’ll be one the kids will be talking about for a while. This show is already sold-out, so I hope you all have your tickets.
