Pitt police arrested an unidentified man Saturday afternoon after he fired a gun several times near Carlow University’s campus in Oakland.

Carlow University and Pittsburgh police responded to a 911 call of gun shots fired near Terrace Street and Chesterfield Street behind Carlow University’s campus around 4:19 p.m. Pitt police arrested the man in front of the Arby’s on Forbes Avenue, which is across the street from their station.

Pittsburgh police Sgt. William Vollberg said a civilian had called 911 around 4:19 and reported two men with guns were running up Terrace Street toward Chesterfield Street.

Minutes earlier, a patrolling Carlow University police officer heard four gunshots near Chesterfield Street, which intersects with Terrace Street, around 4:13 p.m, according to Carlow University police spokesperson Andrew Wilson.

Shortly after the officer heard the shots, Wilson said a young black man ran down Chesterfield Street and dumped a gun into a flower planter at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Chesterfield Street where the Carlow officer later recovered it.

Vollberg said police did not know where the second man went and are still searching for him.

Wilson said he did not have any information on the second man and only knew of the man Pitt police arrested.

Pitt police took the man who dropped the gun into custody near the Arby’s on Forbes Avenue around 4:40 p.m.

Wilson said Carlow police are still interviewing the suspect and have not released his name or filed charges yet.

According to Vollberg, Pittsburgh police recovered two bullet casings near the intersection of Terrace Street and Chesterfield Street. No injuries were reported.
