The Oakland Planning and Development Corp. held a Tuesday public meeting to discuss new UPMC signage throughout Oakland and Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh lamp post and banner installation. The group also continued discussing zoning changes proposed by Walnut Capital.

Pitt announced plans Monday to redevelop its property at 3401 Boulevard of the Allies. The University proposed bringing a grocery store and residential housing units to the property, which currently houses a Panera Bread and was formerly a Quality Inn and Suites.
The Oakland Planning and Development Corp.’s June 24 meeting discussed the pending demolition of the rowhouses located at 3401-3421 Bates St. and transferral of the property to Pitt.

Community members express concerns over plans for Bates row houses

After years of dealing with the series of boarded up and uninhabited Bates Street row houses, Oakland community members are making sure the pending owner of the parcel — Walnut Capital — has definitive plans to fix up the area.
According to a petition, the houses at 3401-3421 Bates St. and 392 Coltart Ave. near Boulevard of the Allies are a “public nuisance” due to their dilapidated and uninhabited state.

Board committee approves Hillman renovations, new chilled water plant and off-campus property acquisitions

The properties and facilities committee of Pitt’s Board of Trustees held a public meeting Thursday morning to approve several projects involving campus buildings. Pitt will also acquire a series of properties around Bates Street, Boulevard of the Allies and Zulema Street.
After closing in April 2017, the Pittsburgh Athletic Association building, now owned by Walnut Capital, is planned to reopen for occupancy in spring 2021.

Renovations to former PAA building continue amid pandemic

Since then, Walnut Capital, a local property management company, has acquired the building and is currently renovating it. Construction began in late summer 2018 and was expected to last 18-24 months, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic as the state halted nonessential construction. Todd Reidbord, president and founding partner of Walnut Capital, said he expects the building to be ready for occupancy in spring 2021.
Representatives from Walnut Capital, Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority and the University of Pittsburgh discussed development plans with the community on Wednesday evening.
