Homecoming elections are running smoothly, according to Colleen Lamb, president of Omicron Delta Kappa.
“As far as criteria for the election this year, we kept it the same as previous years,” Lamb said. “We are planning to change the criteria for next year’s election, but the executive board [of ODK] has not yet sat down and discussed future plans.”
ODK wants to make changes in the election process for Homecoming candidates in the future, along with assessing whether or not ODK is going to sponsor Homecoming after this year, Lamb said.
According to Lamb, student feedback is important to ODK and they are planning to contact those interested in possibly taking over the Homecoming court election process.
“We didn’t want to spring anything on anyone who is planning on running for Homecoming King or Queen this year, and we are extremely concerned with the opinions of the students,” Lamb said.
This year, seniors Sarah Carpenter and Meggan Maromonte are the Homecoming chairs.
“We weren’t concerned because we ran for the position [of Homecoming chairs] and we wanted to run things as planned,” Carpenter said.
This year’s Homecoming election consists of 12 King and 19 Queen candidates, but some might decide to drop out once the campaigning gets on a role, Carpenter added.
Lamb stressed that ODK is not against keeping tradition, but would definitely like to see a positive change in the way elections are ran.
According to Carpenter, Jack Daniel, the vice provost and interim dean of students, said he would also like to see Homecoming more centered on leadership and reflect better on the University as a whole, as opposed to just a popularity contest.
Voting for this year’s Homecoming King and Queen will be next Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 5 p m. in the Litchfield Towers lobby.
