Pitt schools preparing for possible budget cuts

Pitt schools are preparing for possible budget cuts of as much as 10% for the 2020-21 academic year that would affect Pitt’s education and general budget, which includes all schools except for the School of Medicine, Pitt confirmed Thursday.
Paul Cohen, the dean of Pitt’s School of Computing and Information, will step down from his position effective July 1.

Allegheny County to move to yellow phase, University preparing updated guidance

Allegheny County will move from the red phase into the yellow phase of Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 pandemic mitigation strategy on May 15, Gov. Tom Wolf announced Friday. Pitt said it will issue its own guidance about how operations will change in the yellow phase, while still keeping community members safe.
David DeJong, the vice chancellor for human resources, was named the acting senior vice chancellor for business and operations Tuesday.

Pitt streamlines admissions to master’s programs for recent grads

Pitt has launched the Pitt2Pitt program, which loosens entry requirements for 39 master’s programs in 11 schools for undergraduate students graduating this year.
Chancellor Patrick Gallagher said Friday that the University will offer guidance to the community in early June and again in early July.

College Dems across nation call for college student rescue checks

More than 20 of the country’s statewide College Democrats groups called Thursday for Congress to extend economic rescue checks to all American adult dependents in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Around 11,000 students across all five Pitt campuses will receive grants ranging from $500 to $1,000.
